Many older adults can only stay mobile with the use of assistive devices like the drive medical rollators.
For many frail older people, being mobile with a device like the drive medical rollators is a more suitable arrangement compared to being dependent on other people.
Many older adults decrease their physical activity as they age. There is growing evidence that linked physical activity with physiological factors such as functional abilities, cognitive functioning, blood pressure, balance and flexibility muscle strength in older adults.
A study by Barnes et al. showed that older adults with decrease physical activity have experienced greater cognitive decline compared with older adults showing high cardiorespiratory fitness.
Drive Medical Rollators
In order for frail older adults to remain physically active despite the toil brought about by aging, health care professionals prescribed assistive devices like the drive medical rollators.
The Eggermont et al. study tried to examine the amount of energy when walking with a rollator. This study focused on 75 years of age or older subjects. The Eggermont et al. study found that walking with a rollator is sufficient to improve aerobic fitness among older adults (75 years or older). Compared to vacuum cleaning, walking with a rollator is a somewhat higher-intensity activity, the study found. The study also demonstrated that walking with a rollator is somewhat lower-intensity activity than walking down stairs.
Rollators are simply walking frames with wheels. Some have 3 wheels; others have 4 wheels. Drive medical rollators such as the “Rollator with Folding Removable Back Support” have 4 wheels. Drive medical rollators with 4 wheels typically come with a seat for resting and a pouch for carrying personal items.
According to the American Geriatrics Society, rollators are ideal for those who need up to 50% support for their weight. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society, meanwhile, recommend that rollators like the drive medical rollators are ideal only for those who can walk independently but need support on both sides of the body. Drive medical rollators are also suited only for those who have good hand and arm functions.
